EEG stands for “ElectroEncephaloGram” which records the electrical activity of the brain. It is used to diagnose epilepsy and determine the type of seizure. It is also used in the evaluation of brain function in cases of brain inflammation, infection (such as encephalitis or meningitis), encephalopathy, head injury, or degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. It is helpful in the evaluation of periods of altered consciousness or behavioral changes and for the confirmation of brain death.
It is best to follow these guidelines for us to have a better recording output of your brain activity.
Shampoo your hair before coming and do not use any conditioner, gels, oils, or spray.
Avoid taking tranquilizers on the day of the test unless ordered by the physician.
If you have other medications other than tranquilizers, take them as scheduled.
You must have taken a meal or at least not hungry before the test.
For Sleep-Deprived or Sleep & Awake EEG, you must sleep for 2-3 hours only (or as instructed by the requesting physician), the night before the test.
The conductive paste will be applied to your scalp.
You may return to your normal activity. No special procedures are required after the test.
The test has no side effects. However, if you have been asked to deprive yourself of sleep before the test, you should be aware that lack of sleep can provoke seizures among people with epilepsy. You may need to take a nap or rest after the test.
If you develop any rashes around the sites of the electrode contact, please call the EEG Unit or your referring doctor.
Numbness of the extremities is rarely experienced during and after the test (especially during and after hyperventilation/deep breathing), which usually disappears after a few minutes. If not, notify your Attending Physician or proceed to the Emergency Department for immediate evaluation or treatment, if necessary
The procedure takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour so you must keep with your appointment to avoid the inconvenience of waiting and being rescheduled.
The results will be available after two working days. We will give you a post-test instruction which will contain information regarding claiming your result.
